Prospect Waiheke Rouge has entered a new chapter.

Originally conceived as a Merlot-driven blend of Bordeaux varietals, Prospect has evolved into a reflection of Waiheke Island's wine story — from the Island's Bordeaux-inspired origins, through the rise of Syrah across Aotearoa, to now the exploration of indigenous varieties. Our Prospect captures the history and potential of Waiheke Island.

This history naturally aligns with Obsidian Vineyard. Prospect is now a single-vineyard field blend, which allows us to select grapes with character suited to an earlier-drinking style — freeing up fruit with greater concentration and cellaring potential for use in the Obsidian Reserve wines.

Grape selection, whole-bunch inclusion and the use of neutral oak come together to create a wine that reflects the character of the vineyard.

Prospect will continue to reflect vintage variation, with the varietals taking the lead changing from year to year. In 2024, 30% of the blend comes from two different Syrah blocks, 30% from younger Montepulciano vines, and 15% from Merlot. The remaining portion is made up of a selection of Bordeaux varietals and Tempranillo.
